Many people might ask why she was called “Jo”, but christened “Margaret”. Well, she never liked Margaret, because it was always being shortened to Maggie. And the Jo alternative was born the very first time I met her at the Watford Jazz cub. For a laugh, she and her friend decided that night to change their names. Sandra became Perry (after Perry Como, the singer) and Margaret became Jo. For the next two months I introduced my new girlfriend to all my friends and family as Jo. But during my first visit to her house to meet her family, her parents kept saying “Margaret do this” and “Margaret do that”. I was really confused, but said nothing until later when kissing her good night I asked why everyone kept calling her Margaret. And only at that point did she own up to her prank. For the next 59 years I called her Jo, (unless I wanted to slightly annoy her, when I would call her Margaret!) My Mum, on the other hand, who had first met her as Jo, immediately switched to calling her Margaret because that was the name she had been given at birth. As you can imagine it did cause some confusion at times.
